A Smaller Way Into Sculpture: Two New Piece of Cake Wall Reliefs
Share
Two new works from Teemu Salonen’s Piece of Cake series have joined Limited Time Gallery. Piece of Cake 2 and Piece of Cake 3 are unique pastel wall reliefs that bring Salonen’s sculptural language into a compact, more approachable format.
The news is simple—two new works are available—but their scale opens a broader question: does beginning to collect sculpture have to begin with a large object?
Small in scale, complete as artworks
A smaller work is not necessarily a reduced version of a larger idea. These reliefs contain the same concerns that run through Salonen’s larger sculptures: ornament, flowers, uncertain surfaces, sweetness, humour and the point at which beauty becomes almost excessive.
The works recall old decorative reliefs, painted plaster and ceramics, yet do not imitate any single tradition. Pastel colour moves softly across the forms instead of following every edge precisely. The result is hazy and slightly unstable—part botanical fragment, part confection, part sculptural object.
Made slowly, even at a small scale
The base of each relief is digitally modelled and 3D-printed. Every work is then painted by hand and finished with two thick layers of resin. Resin and paraffin give the surface its misty, caramel-like depth, making the colour seem suspended inside the work rather than simply applied on top.
Each relief is unique and signed. Recessed hanging points make the works easy to place on a wall, while their light weight keeps installation uncomplicated.
A more approachable starting point for collecting sculpture
Original sculpture can feel like a commitment: of space, installation and budget. A compact wall relief changes that practical equation without turning the work into a reproduction or an edition. There is still only one.
Piece of Cake 2 is currently available for €400 and Piece of Cake 3 for €350. Their size and price make them among the most approachable works in Salonen’s current selection, while the hand-finished surface keeps each one unmistakably individual.
The same series, another route
Piece of Cake 1 is currently available through Taiko for €350. Salonen’s Taiko profile also includes other smaller works.
If a larger sculpture is not the right scale or budget for a particular home, this offers another way into the work. Different galleries and formats do not form a hierarchy; they are different points of entry into the same practice. A first acquisition can be small and still carry the complete presence of an original artwork.
